THE SETTING
The New Britain Museum of American Art is located next to Walnut Hill Park which was designed by nationally known landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted. Renowned for being the first Museum in the country dedicated only to American Art, the Museum’s collection represents four centuries of artistic achievement and until a few years ago had been hung in the historic Landers Mansion.
The 43,000-square-foot Chase Family Building, opened in 2006, was designed by award-winning Ann Beha Architects of Boston and has a dramatic lobby, a terrace overlooking the park, private event spaces and twelve soaring galleries. This modern limestone and glass building is connected to the original museum by a glass walled gallery hung with whimsical sculptures.
